Kids Jiu-Jitsu in Thamesford

Jiu-Jitsu teaches kids how to move, think, problem-solve and stay calm under pressure all while building confidence, coordination and physical fitness. Starting at age 4, our kids programs teach real Jiu-Jitsu in a fun, supportive environment where children learn skills that carry far beyond the mats.

What kids get out of jiu-jitsu

Jiu-Jitsu gives kids a sport where technique, leverage, timing and control matter more than being the biggest, strongest or fastest. It’s a grappling art with no punches or kicks, allowing kids to learn how to control positions, escape, defend themselves and work through challenges with a partner.

Classes are organized by age and ability, with coaches focused on creating a safe, positive environment where kids can learn and challenge themselves at the right level.

Learning through games

Kids learn best when they’re having fun. Our younger classes use purposeful games to teach real Jiu-Jitsu movements and concepts games that develop balance, movement, grips, angles, coordination and body awareness without making learning feel like a lesson.

As kids get older, the games become more structured and are paired with technical instruction and live training. Every class has a purpose, and every game helps build a skill they’ll use on the mat.

Wolf Cubs — ages 4 to 6

A 30-minute class designed specifically for young children. Cubs learn the foundations of Jiu-Jitsu through movement, games and age-appropriate drills, developing balance, coordination, body awareness and safe falling skills while being introduced to basic positions and movements.

Just as importantly, they learn how to listen, take turns, work with a partner and follow a class structure. The goal is to make their first experience with Jiu-Jitsu positive, engaging and something they look forward to each week.

Wolf Pups — ages 7 to 12

A 50-minute class combining technical instruction, purposeful games and age-appropriate live training. Students begin developing a deeper understanding of Jiu-Jitsu while learning positions, escapes, takedowns, controls and submissions through a structured curriculum.

As they progress through the program, they develop not only their Jiu-Jitsu skills, but also the confidence, discipline and resilience that come from working through challenges on the mat.

13 and up

At 13, students can begin training in our adult program. They’ll learn alongside older students in a structured environment, starting with the same fundamentals that form the foundation of our adult Jiu-Jitsu program.

The transition is about more than age, it’s about readiness. Our coaches work with each student and their family to make sure they’re comfortable, prepared and ready to take the next step onto the adult mats.

Frequently asked

Is jiu-jitsu safe for kids?
There is no striking at all, which removes the injury risk parents worry about most. Injuries do happen and are almost always minor — sore fingers, mat burn. Coaches stop rounds early and often.
What age can children start?
Three. Wolf Cubs is built for three to six-year-olds and Wolf Pups picks up at seven. Each group is kept close in age and size so the class works for everyone in the room.
My child is shy — will they cope?
Shy children often do best here. There is no crowd watching, no bench to sit on, and no team to let down. Progress is measured against themselves.
How often should my child train?
Once or twice a week is plenty to begin with. Most children find their own pace after a month or so, and there is no pressure to add more.
Does my child need to be athletic?
No. Being unathletic is a reason to start, not a reason to stay away.
What should they wear to the first class?
Shorts and a t-shirt with no zips. We lend a gi free for the first month.
What happens when my child turns 13?
They move up into the adult classes. It is not automatic on the birthday — we talk it through with you first and make the move when they are ready for it.
